Pastor Charged With Stealing

Pastor Michael Golu, 30, of the Church of Christ in Nigeria, has been arraigned before a Jos Upper Area Court for defrauding a footballer, Nwomeke Onoyo, of N500,000.


The cleric was arraigned on a three-count charge of cheating, breach of trust and forgery for collecting the money from Onoyo to purchase two plots of land for him.


Prosecutor Ashiru Ibrahim told the court presided over by Malam Mustapha Hassan that the offence was committed on November 11.


Ibrahim said that Onoyo had reported to the ‘C’ Division Police Station that he gave the accused N500,000 to assist him purchase two plots of land behind Tomatoes Market on Rukuba Road in Jos.


“The accused gave the complainant some documents which he claimed to be for the purchase of the two plots of land belonging to the footballer.


“When the complainant presented the documents to the village head of the area for confirmation, the documents were found to be fake.”


The prosecutor said that several attempts by the complainant to retrieve his money from the accused proved abortive. He added that the offence was contrary to Sections 312, 322 and 364 of the Penal Code.


Golu pleaded not guilty to the charges and urged the court to grant him bail.


Hassan thereafter granted him bail in the sum of N100,000 and one surety residing within the jurisdiction of the court.


He adjourned the matter to January 27, 2012 for continuation.
