Jos Chrisis (The Horrors of Jos) 10 Years & Counting

Before September 2001, if you had walked up to someone on the street and told that person that There’ll be a major religious/political/ethnic war that’ll transform Jos from Home of Peace and Tourism to Home of Pieces and Terrorism, and last over 10 years, you would probably have been laughed at, or looked at like an idiot.

Why would anyone ever believe it? Prior to September 2001, Jos was the home to all the Ajeburras. The vacation spots for all the people who lived the hectic lives in Lagos, Port and other areas in the country. Quiet, peaceful, and neat. You meet someone from Jos and you can just tell by how extra refined they were.

But in September 2001, like a dream all that vanished and the thought of Jos transformed from a Peaceful calm place, to where “they are fighting and killing people“. You meet someone today and say I’m from Jos, and they reaction is “Isn’t that where they are killing people?”

The horrors of Jos is not what anyone should use their 2 eyes to see. You hear stories but it’s unimaginable until you see pictures or you hear first hand accounts.

I remember talking to a friend who was inches away from the initial battle area hiding in a shop where all the other innocent people were. It was raining and she saw blood flowing down the road with the water. Once the soldiers were able to get to them and take them home, she remembers the truck driving over dead bodies on the way home, and looking over a bridge to see a heap of bodies laid out by the river.

A close friend of mine describes that another incident where he saw, a lorry filled with dead bodies driving to a mass grave to dump all the bodies. Miles away there is an open field with over 100 bodies roasted and decomposing. You cant even begin to imagine that.

But a lot of people didn’t have to imagine because they saw it and much worse.

As years go by, the carnage continues. In early 2010, Jos made major headlines again, as a group of Fulani herdsmen completely slaughtered a village filled with women and young children. A lot of us saw the pictures of mutilated babies as young as a year old. Little kids with their heads scalped, cut in half, women with their necks slit. Yes… It’s not pretty, but it did happen.

It’s almost becomes a battle of who can inflict the most pain and send the gorier message to the opponent.

Over the last Sallah festival, a group of Muslims were attacked and the things that happened just broke my spirit even more. Reports of people eating the roasted remains of their victims, heads on sticks put on display, limbs, and heads scattered around. On one account someone told me people started selling the body parts as souvenirs.

I’ve seen some of those pictures, and it doesn’t matter what side you’re on or who you support it has to send chills down your spine. But I realize with many of us J-town people, it doesn’t anymore. We see it and just move on. We might cringe for a about 10 seconds, and say “God Dey” and move on. It’s like we’ve just grown accustomed to extreme violence or decide to shut it out of our minds. Imagine all this carnage happening and people are around watching and taking pictures… literally.

At this point, I myself have grown numb towards news from Jos. And why shouldn’t I? 10 years of fighting no longer becomes breaking news, it’s normal thing. A lot of us have given up hope.

I’m not here wanting to say what side is right or not, cos personally I think this all comes down to politics. This has gone past wearing tee-shirts that say “jostified”. This has gone passed updating my BB status or changing my FB picture or ranting on twitter. This is had gone passed any form of human comprehension.

At this point, you can say the horrors of Jos has made my mind numb. It’s like watching a horror movie over and over again. After a while, it doesn’t scare you anymore. Now imagine a child growing up around this. Why would death or killing affect him/her?

ABSU Gang Rape: The Case

BBC is reporting that the Nigerian police have arrested two people in connection with the gang-rape of a woman posted on the internet.

Bala Hassan, the commissioner for police in Abia State, said the two men were detained after cyber activists posted pictures and names online. There are no reports of who the suspects are as of right now.

The video has been the hot topic of discussion all over country this past week and has shocked Nigeria both for the brutal nature of the rape and the initial failure to investigate. The news was eventually carried by the Associated Press.

Despite the video of the rape being widely watched online, officials in Abia State had declared their short investigations over as the victim had not come forward, and an official statement from the governor claimed the rapists were not ABSU students and the video was put together by his political enemies.

What followed was a sustained campaign on social networks to force the police back into action and to uncover clues from the video that might identify the culprits.

On Thursday the Nigerian national assembly called on the police to re-open their investigation.

Three days later, based purely on names and photos posted online, they have made two arrests.

The rape victim also appears to have been located and women’s rights group has said they are now in touch with her and are trying to get her out of Abia State to where she can receive counselling and medical attention.

This high-profile case has highlighted what campaigners say is the Nigerian police’s refusal to take rape seriously as a crime.

Nadia Buari, D’banj & Trey Songz at the Vodafone 020 Live Pre-Concert Cocktail Event in Ghana

A few days ago, news spread that D’banj had specially requested for Nadia Buari to attend the Vodafone 020 Live concert in Ghana to ensure that he delivers an amazing performance of his hit “Oliver Twist” on stage (Nadia is one of the stars namechecked in the song “I like Nadia Buari cos she no dey drink garri“)

Well, it seems as though his wish came true as Ghollywood/Nollywood star, Nadia Buari was spotted at the Vodafone 020 Live Pre-Concert Cocktail Event in Accra.

Other stars at the event included Trey Songz who is headlining the concert and controversial hiphop vixen Amber Rose. At the party, Amber responded to criticism that she only showed the “poor side of Ghana” by posting photos of herself with seemingly impoverished children. She responded by admitting that she had seen the immense riches in Ghana but encouraged the rich to do more to help the poor in Ghana.

R&B star Trey Songz who is visiting Ghana for the first time expressed his love of the country and admitted that he was happy with the welcome reception he has received so far.

Governor Adams Oshiomhole Of Edo Scolds and Arrests of Task Force Officer

On Monday Governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo state ran to the scene of a demolition exercise in Benin city. The governor visited the site to see how some controversial demolition was executed by the state Task Force on Demolition of Illegal Properties.

Apparently angered by some demolitions that he claimed was mischievously done by the team Mr. Oshiomhole publicly scolded Major Lawrence Loye (rtd), the task force chair. As it turned out, Major Loye and his team had demolished buildings belonging to the former governor of the state, Samuel Ogbemudia and a former senator, Roland Owei. Both men are strong political “heavyweights” with close links to the governor.

Sugar Mummy and I: The beginning

I’m sitting in my mum’s shop away from the busy life of Lagos (mind you, we live in the suburbs of Lagos) trying to think what next after graduation, cos this boredom is killing me like crazy. Months now since I dropped the pen after that very last exam and popping champagne and drinking booze all-night trying to believe we’ve graduated (even though we aint seen our result yet) and the thought of NYSC is still months away, does kill me (partially because I think it’s a waste of a year in your life and the suspense of not knowing if you’d be thrown in a crisis torn or technologically deprived village). Amidst this thought my phone rang…. The second ring broke my thought and on checking who it was it was Mrs. Y(name withheld).

Mrs. Y is the wife of the ambassador of Nigeria to a Caribbean country(name withheld), she has a very successful chain of boutiques and supermarkets(name withheld) and was in Nigeria most times rather than being with her husband, she has two daughters and a son, both daughters are my age group but still in some private university(name withheld).

Hmmmm….How did we meet? You might ask. I met her at a famous cinema at Yaba. I watched her daughter with great interest as she ran off to meet a friend of hers and I had to take the lift with her and in the silence of the lift, I heard a voice say “You seem to like my daughter huh?!” Trying to pretend I didn’t hear her the first time, I said “’scuse me?” Then she said “Oh! Come off it, it’s not like I dint see you staring at my Teni”, Then I chuckled “you got me there ma“.

“My name is Mrs. Y and I think I’ll be stuck to you past this elevator, you won’t mind some company would you?”
“Naaah” I said, without thinking twice.

DING, The elevator opens and after the “after you” courtesy, I now realized that she is indeed a fine woman with a J-lo kinda body. We decided to chat off at one of the eateries while we wait for our movie. I told her a little about myself and she told me a whole lot – she got married at nineteen and now thirty nine with three kids and how she knows that her husband fools around with Caribbean girls, but she can’t do anything about it because he’s ten years older.

She told me about Temi, Teni and Timi. I fell in love with her family straight away, and we kept on talking and I don’t know when or how it slipped that I’ve always wanted a sugar mummy, she picked up her bag and said;

“You haven’t found one yet, keep searching!”

Dumbfounded and confused I eased myself out of the chair to chase her down the hall, but her daughter and her friends had caught up with her and I could do nothing. I had blown it (or so I thought!). Surprisingly her daughter and friends went to see a different movie (some romantic comedy with Jennifer Aniston as a reporter who jumped bail and was hunted by her cop ex-husband) and she went to see clash of the titans, I quickly opted for the same movie, though I had seen it twice already.

As I entered the dark movie hall, trying to use the screen light to find my way to my sugar mama(oops I mean soon-to-be), I noticed her in the corner at the top corner sitting alone enjoying her movie and I went to meet her and sat beside her, after twenty minutes I decided to talk since she wouldn’t.

“Ok, so I fucked up…..I’m sorry.” She just kept on eating her popcorn and watching her movie. “Ok fine, I’d just go in front of the screen and yell I’m sorry” I continued.

She called my bluff and asked me to do it. “You know I can’t, pls I’m really sorry”

And then something crazy happened, she drew me closer and kissed me… “I have less than two hours before my kids finish their movie… Do u know a place we can be alone together?” she said.

Before I could snap outta the kiss, she thought of somewhere and said “let’s go!” We got to the lot downstairs and she threw the key of her Honda element to me and said, “You drive and I’d navigate”, I told her I wanted to get some condoms at dominos supermarket, she chuckles and asked me to hurry. Like superman, I was back at the car in seconds and we were zooming off to a cute guest house in alagomeji and I did the checking in and next we knew we were staring each other in the eye inside the loft room; not like we did not know what to do, but where to start from. I made a gesture by looking at my wrist and she jumped at me and was kissing me all over and as I begin to undress her I noticed a tattoo of a tiger on her back (she probably had a short but fun filled youth that was cut short by her marriage and pregnancy or I just might be wrong). I gently worked my way across her body (not minding the time we had left at first) and we made love three times (twice in the bedroom and once in the bathroom under the shower) and we laid the bed together whilst acknowledging each other’s prowess. We were about to leave the room when I noticed she still had her shower cap on. Oops… We got that fixed and then checked out.

We got into the car and she opted to drive back and was acting shy, I was about asking her what’s wrong when I got a call from my girlfriend asking me how my day was. “Thrilling, tiring yet satisfying” I said. She probably thought I meant it more figuratively rather literally and had a little chat about her day and she dropped the line. Mrs. Y said I was crazy for telling her what I said and we both laughed as she concluded how stupid females can be when they are in love and can’t see the obvious things (sorry ladies….she said so). She even made a joke by saying if a girl in love sees her boyfriend having sex with her sister, he can still deny it saying it’s her evil twin or it wasn’t him or the sister drugged him and she’d believe him.

We got back just in time for the credits and she introduced me to her daughter as a new friend and Teni immediately loved me but somehow Temi and I never got along fine. Teni loved my sense of humour, my looks and the fact that I had finished school, still very young and Temi didn’t believe any of those (or so I thought at first). I told them I had to leave early because the holdup I was to face on my way home. She asked me where I was headed and surprisingly, we stayed not so far from each other (who would have thought someone of their status would live in the area I stayed in) and she asked me to hop in.

I sat between Temi and Teni and I made sure Temi liked something about me. She ended up appreciating my writing skills when I showed her some of my write up on my blogsite. Teni kept complaining I was shifting the attention to Temi and I was forced to turn to her as she was showing me pictures  on facebook via her nokia N97 (some crazy ass phone that has 32gigabyte. who needs that?!) and she checked mine as well and noticed my status that says “complicated” and she kept on questioning it and I asked her jokingly if she would love to fill the space. Instead of saying no, like most girls would, she asked what it will take her to fill it and jokingly I replied “Kiss me here and we are on.”

And she did lean over in an attempt to do so when I stopped her and whispered to her ears, “we’d do it where we can get our clothes off after” and she simply chuckled and nodded in agreement. I thought to myself, just in case this is not a dream, I just might have a shot at all three of them and Temi broke my thoughts by whispering to my other ear that she’s on her period that’s why she can’t afford a smile for now and she does like me a lot already so I don’t get the wrong idea about her and just then Mrs. Y said she wanted to grab some salad at the eatery and get their daily supply of waste for their dog and asked me to escort her on our way and she said;

“Thank you for playing along with my girls and when next do I see you again my baby?” It’s funny she actually thought I was playing along. “I’m at home most mornings before I go to the shop later in the day and the girls will be back in school by next weekend” she continued. At that point I wanted to opt out then she placed an envelope in my hands and said “Thanks for today and pls keep this a secret as long as you can!”

2011 Version of top 10 hottest men in Nigeria Entertainment Industry

Richard Mofe Damijo:Ever since he emerged on the scene with a role in the popular TV show “Ripples”, RMD has always been a hottie and in 2011, Mr. Mofe-Damijo has not lost his appeal.

Naeto-C: There is just something about Naeto-C… In my opinion, he’s not even traditionally handsome but he has quite a lot of appeal and (sorry I’m about to use the dreaded “S” word)…Swag! There, I said it. Mr. “Only Emcee with an MSc” packs a lot of swag and I consider him to be quite hot.
Wizkid: Hey, even 20 (or is it 21?) year olds need love and Wizzy baby definitely gets mad love from me. I remember the first time I watched Banky W’s “Lagos Party” video and for the first 2 minutes, all I could focus on was the little cutie with the red plastic shades. Wizzy is definitely a young lil hottie and I predict that in the next couple of years, he will be causing serious wahala with the ladies.
Lynxxx: Chuckie Lynxxx aka Mr. Change Your Parade is undeniably handsome and has that swag + appeal thing going for him. I can’t even hate on the brother, he is truly one of the hottest in the Nigerian entertainment industry

The BlackBerry Bold 9900 lands in Nigeria

BainStone Business Analyst  Technology contributor, Jite Ovueraye is a certified BB addict! Now that the new BlackBerry Bold has been released in Nigeria, he wants everyone to “share his joy”! Read on…

Here in Nigeria, we love good things (come on, who doesn’t?), and as technology keeps advancing, we Naija Bobos and Chikitos can’t slack. We all know a good thing when we see it and just by the rate at which “Can I get your number?” changed to “So what’s your pin?” you can tell BlackBerrys are in the good column.

Just like that, the day to up our BB game has come. Ok…so maybe it came a few days ago but as of now it’s fair to say the BlackBerry fun times are here again.

A while back, I talked about the launch of the new BB OS7 devices; about how great they looked and the huge leap in performance delivery. Not too much time passed after that before the folks at RIM kept their word and invited a select few to come say “hi” to the RIM team leading the move to Nigeria. (If you didn’t know their BlackBerry headquarters in West Africa is going to be in Lagos. Check out this post)

With that meeting in mind, it’s fair to say that the BB addicts in Nigeria have made a great impression on RIM, so that’s why they made sure we users (CrackBerry heads, I call’em) have great subscription options for our BIS, from the various networks.

Yes, that’s a step in the right direction, but the reason I sound so excited is that, as I said earlier, the day is here! And the day I speak of, is the day we can stroll to our favorite mobile phone retailer, right here in Nigeria and pick up our very own, brand spanking new BlackBerry Bold 9900/9300.

Yes, you heard me right, the touch screen, original style Bold devices are hitting shelves all over Nigeria as you read. The Bold 9900/9930 fits snugly in your palm at a measly 10.5 mm thick and approximately 130g, with a 2.8-inch touchscreen and QWERTY keyboard (This revert to the original style Bold may not favour everyone, as I saw a lady complaining it was way too bulky, however too each their own I say.)

So there I was just sitting at home when a friend ask me “Have you gotten yours yet?” of course I ask “My what?” to which we proceeded to Computer Village after some talk, then next thing you know (cue background music), there it was. All boxed up and looking gorgeous.

Having gotten a real close look at the device right there in “hustle central” I could see it’s similarities to BlackBerry OS6, but thanks to a faster processor it all feels so good. I remembered wondering what all the fuss was about regarding “liquid graphics” but swishing from app to app, picture to video and so on, it’s easy to see where the name came from, it’s just so fluid. The user interface is sleek and smooth and with the slew of new icons all over the OS the positive difference, was welcomed. Oh, and the added ability to rearrange and customize the home screen views is also pretty neat. All this and we haven’t even mentioned the great new features (NFC, Magnetometer, Accelerometer, etc) and tons of ways to use them. (Just hearing about the “Augmented Reality” applications has me thinking “yikes! What could possibly be next?”)

After I fiddled with it and found out it costs between N100,000 – N130,000 (depending on who you know and your verbal acrobatic skills), I went home longing for it. Fair enough it is a tasty device, however the price is bound to make you take a step back. It’s not like we are in the UK or elsewhere that our mobile networks offer contracts and the phones come practically free, in most cases over here you just have to shell out the big bucks one time. Which can’t be fun no matter the size of your cash stack.

So to soothe my ailing wallet, I decided to let Google soothe me, and the research led me to some awesome developments and my BlackBerry connects where hit up for more details.

Let me give you some of the hot news I discovered; I love apps but Blackberry have never really been up to par with their competition on that front, and most people know that android apps outnumber BlackBerry ones to no end. The good news is that many android apps are reportedly being tweaked to work on BBs with OS7, basically BlackBerry App World just got bigger. What’s more is that RIM has been working on a way to give software developers in Nigeria more incentives to do what they love. They launched their beta Native SDK (Software Development Kit) for BlackBerry Tablet OS, I could go all ‘tech geek’ but I’ll just say it allows developers create richer and more visually stunning games for the PlayBook. (Get more info on the SDK HERE and , anyway, for more apps for BB, check out my Th3rdCulture post HERE)

This is just awesome as the (coming soon) “BlackBerry Superphone” will come with the dual core QNX hardware platform (The power behind the high performance on the PlayBook). So very soon all games and software designed for the playbook will surely be on the new “super-phones” as well (“Need for speed” on my BB? Can I get a Geeky Hi-Five please?).

Also, we all know someone (or like me, are someone) who constantly loses, drops, formats or worse, their BB so finding “Blackberry Protect” app really made my day and then I read that RIM recently launching their BlackBerry Management Center, which was designed specifically for small businesses. It’s a free service where you can wireless back up, protect your content, locate the device by making it ring or even wipe contents where ever it is and so much more.

So as for me I’m saving up my Kobos as the BlackBerry Bold 5 (as people are bound to call it) is here and will be in your face as your friends and random strangers show it off at a public place near you.

Anyway, the screen touching, QWERTY tapping, 5mp picture taking, super fast browsing device is here, and now comes with 3 different ways to navigate your device. Touch the screen, use the track pad or the keyboard, (though this may actually be a drawback for some people as more options means more ways to get confused) however for others it’s the way forward. So get a move on to your mobile dealers and get the Bold 9900/9300, because trust me, the phone is worth the hype, even though your bank account will be the one to feel the brunt of this beauty. (Although I’m sure the new “All Screen Torch” will blow our minds as well, but that’s gist for another day.)

New Music: Jesse Jagz – Demo

Brand new joint from Jesse Jaga himself from his upcoming album/EP Omo Abaga.

Jesse Jagz has been on his grind lately, and dropping hit after hit, from Las Gidi Griding to Choc Swag. Omo Abaga is really setting out to take a strong hold of 2011. Jesse Jagz is way passed beasting these days and is making everyone know that he just might be the guy for 2011.

Hopefully the EP Omo Abaga drops soon as from what we hear it’s supposed to be bananas. There’s a joint on that EP that is crazy… think of a sample from an 80s classic.

For now though, enjoy this joint, Demo`… *some people jealous me*

Hennessy Cognac: Banky W, Eldee, Jesse Jags & MI Rock France With Hennessy Cognac

A week after releasing the theme song for Hennessy Artistry 2011, Eldee, Jesse Jagz and Banky W embarked on a scheduled trip to Cognac, France on September 5, 2011

The artistes were treated to “The Hennessy Heritage Experience” alongside Chocolate City’s MI who has worked closely with Hennessy in the past.

“This is really our way of giving these artistes a unique one on one experience with Hennessy Cognac” Communications Manager Tokini Peterside told journalists early this week.

While in France, these artistes were treated to a night in “Chateau de Bagnolet”- a private chateau in Cognac belonging to the Hennessy Family. Banky W, eLDee, Jesse Jagz and MI joined the likes of Common, The Roots and Alexander Burke on the list of prestigious guests at the exclusive Hennessy chateau.

“We were welcomed at the Chateau de Bagnolet by the Hennessy Ambassador, Cyrille Gautier Auriol. It was a big one for me knowing that noteworthy guests like Joe Cocker, Ray Charles and others have also been hosted there before”  Banky W says.

He continues “We went through the Vineyard, where we were made to understand the difference between the grape varieties chosen and used during Hennessy production, after which we returned to the Chateau de Bagnolet where we mixed our special Hennessy Concoctions with the assistance of a mixologist.

“The highest point of the trip for me was when we met Renaud de Gironde- (A member of the Filioux family who have served as Hennessy’s master blenders since 1765), he took us through a process of blending, and we each got to create a unique blend of our own in bottles bearing our names and labels. We brought these back with us to Lagos”” eLDee says.

In addition to visiting Hennessy’s vineyards, the artistes also visited the Founder’s Cellar – Hennessy has over 42 kilometers of Cellars in Cognac

“It was massive” MI who has worked closely with Hennessy since 2009 says “On each barrel in the Founder’s cellar was the year when the eaux-de-vie (a pure colorless brandy extracted from fermented grape juice) was first placed into the barrel, and we saw dozens of barrels dated as far back as 1836!”

Producer Jesse Jagz adds, “My favorite part of the trip was when we returned to Paris on September 7. We went to Galleries Lafayette, the Eiffel Tower and L’arc de triomphe, and then we finished the evening at the top of the stunning Centre Pompidou. We were blown away by the city’s beauty.”

The team returned to Nigeria on September 8, 2011.

Hennessy Nigeria Communications Manager Tokini Peterside says the experience and trip for the musicians is a “strong commitment from Hennessy to exciting collaborations with Nigerian talents”

On Thursday September 1, the 2011 Hennessy Artistry theme song was released on the Beat 99.9 FM and progressively became viral online within minutes of release. Titled “Toast to the Good Life”, after hundreds of audience suggestions, the track blends together the talents of Banky W, eLDee the Don and Tiwa Savage and was produced by Jesse Jagz with support from Banky W and Master Kraft.
