KANO-The ancient city of Kano was thrown into shock yesterday when the police paraded three high profile cases of rape that involves an 80-year-old, Shuaibu Jibrin of Dakata quarters in the state capital. Jibrin was accused of raping a four-year girl.
Also, Ado Shehu, 65, and an unnamed police corporal were paraded by the police for raping three and four year-old girls.
Briefing journalists on the harvest of arrest that includes 55 hardened criminals, the Police Commissioner, Ibrahim Idris, stated that the octogenarian allegedly lured the innocent girl into his room where he committed the crime.
Idris said the police officer, who was also accused of raping a four-year-old girl in the barracks, had been dismissed from service, stressing that the three suspected rapists would be charged to court.
The police commissioner, who lamented the rising cases of rape in Kano State, confirmed that doctors’ reports on all the cases had established crime, adding that the police would use the said reports to prosecute the matter.
He said: “Rape cases are on the increase and becoming an issue of concern to everybody. The danger is that we have recorded many cases of rape on minors lately.
’’We are calling on everybody; especially the NGOs to carry out campaigns against it, with the aim of addressing the scourge,” he stated.
The Police Commissioner said his command picked 56 suspects who committed crimes in the state ranging from armed robbery, unlawful assembly, possession of dangerous weapons and dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp.
