Police rescue transporter brother from kidnappers

A Warri- based transporter, Mr. Joseph Ohuyon and his brother, David, have been rescued  from the den of kidnappers at Unuaze village in Uromi, Esan North-East Local Government Area of  Edo State, after a gun battle between men the state Police Command and the kidnappers.

Edo State Commissioner of Police, Mr. David Omojola, who disclosed this in Benin, yesterday, explained that police struck at the kidnappers’ den on December 28, after the victims, who had earlier paid N40million ransom were making effort to pay an additional N5million.

While explaining that the victims were rescued unhurt, he added that the kidnappers escaped with bullet wounds.

The Police boss listed items recovered from the kidnappers to include two AK 47 rifles with bayonets on them, one browny pistol, and seven AK 47 magazines with 30 rounds of live ammunition each, one empty rifle magazine, two handcuffs, one leg chain and two different vehicle plate numbers.

It will be recalled that Joseph had earlier, said the kidnappers called his bank to confirm his accounts before he was conditionally freed. He was held hostage for 33 days.

Ohunyon was temporarily released after the kidnappers saw he could not immediately raise the N100 million they demanded, but his younger brother and Operations Manager, who were recently rescrued by Police had brought some money to effect his (Joseph’s) release, but was seized by the kidnappers, pending when he would complete the ransom.

Joseph confirmed that the kidnappers called his bank on phone to confirm that he did not have N100 million in his account before he was conditionally released, saying that his life was presently under threat, as they (kidnappers) wanted him to pay the ransom or his wife and children would be killed.

Narrating his ordeal in the hands of the kidnappers to Vanguard in Warri, he said, “I went on a sympathy visit to my home town Ekpoma, Edo State on November 19, and it turned into a nightmare, which lasted for 33 days. Even after the incident, I am still being threatened by the same people who kidnapped me on that fateful day.”
