EFCC website has been Hacked; Claimed Fuel Cabal Arrested: The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on Friday in Abuja said it had not made any arrest over fuel the subsidy scam.
The commission also raised the alarm over an alleged breach of its website by hackers.
The EFCC was reacting to a story on its website that the chairman of CONOIL and Globacom boss, Mike Adenuga; AP boss, Femi Otedola and others, including officials of the Petroleum Products Pricing Regulatory Agency and Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, who were alleged to have defrauded the country of several billions of naira, had been arrested.
The report, credited to the commission’s ex-spokesman, Mr. Femi Babafemi, claimed that 21 executive directors had been detained and were being quizzed over fresh information that they allegedly misappropriated some money from fuel subsidy.
The acting chairman of the EFCC, Mr. Ibrahim Larmode, told our correspondent that, “There was no such arrest and it is not true.”
The spokesman of the commission, Mr. Wilson Uwujaren, in an “EFCC Alert,” also said the report should be disregarded in its entirety. The alert reads, “The attention of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has been drawn to a report that appeared on its website this morning and entitled, Fuel Subsidy Scam: EFCC Detains Adenuga, Otedola, Others.
“The commission wishes to inform the general public that the said report, which was purportedly signed by Femi Babafemi, a former Head of Media and Publicity, did not originate from it.
“Mr. Babafemi has since ceased to be the commission’s Head of Media. He is therefore not in a position to sign any statement on behalf of the EFCC.
“The statement is purely the work of hackers, who breached the site and should be disregarded. Efforts are being made to track and arrest the persons behind the breach.”
