UI VC - Why we offered 106 postgraduate scholarships

UI VC - Why we offered 106 postgraduate scholarships: The Vice-Chancellor, University of Ibadan, Prof. Isaac Adewole, has said the urge to encourage the youth to take up a career in the academics and thereby bridge the generational gap in the institution informed the award of full postgraduate scholarships to 106 graduates of the school.

The university had awarded full scholarships to the 106 graduates who passed out with First Class degrees in various disciplines during the last convocation late last year.

He however said the university took the decision in line with its mandate to spearhead massive production of postgraduate students.

“We are the first in the country and we have a mandate to produce postgraduate students that will drive the university system; but you will discover that brilliant graduates who are supposed to be groomed to take over from experienced professors are not interested in the system because of poor welfare package and lack of motivation.

“So, we believe that with a full scholarship and monthly stipend for the first set of beneficiaries, the human capacity development will be encouraged,” he said.

While admitting that some of the beneficiaries might not stay after completing their postgraduate programmes, Adewole expressed optimism that about 75 per cent would be retained.

He explained that the scholarship would cover tuition, accommodation and books, adding that they would also receive monthly stipends to enable them to concentrate on their studies.

On how the university hoped to finance the scheme in the face of dwindling resources, Adewole said, “I believe that when we manage our resources well, it will not be difficult for us to finance the scheme.”
