South Africa launches Nelson Mandela Currency Bank notes

South Africa launched a new line of bank notes Saturday bearing the image of its first democratically elected president Nelson Mandela on the 22nd anniversary of his release from prison.

The announcement pays tribute to the legacy of a Nobel Peace Prize-winner known as one of the world’s greatest statesmen.

But it will likely be met with some derision when markets re-open Monday after officials’ billing of the secretive unveiling as an “announcement of national importance” sent the rand and stock markets on a downward spike Friday.

“It is my honour and pleasure to announce that new South African bank notes will bear the image of president Mandela, the first president of a free, democratic South Africa,” President Jacob Zuma told a press conference in Pretoria.

The notes bear the 93-year-old former president’s image circa 1990, the year he was freed from prison in a moment that came to symbolise the fall of apartheid and the rise of a new, democratic South Africa.

They replace a design featuring the “big five” safari animals — Cape buffalo, elephant, leopard, lion and rhino — introduced in 1992, two years before Mandela was elected the country’s first black president.

All five notes — 10, 20, 50, 100 and 200 rand ($1.29 – $25.80, 0.98 – 19.60 euros) — will now bear Mandela’s face on the front. Officials would not say what design would be on the back.

Zuma praised the former president’s legacy, calling him “Madiba,” the clan name by which he is affectionately known.

“It needed a president like Madiba to lead a bruised nation like ours on a journey of forgiveness and reconciliation, and he acquitted himself exceptionally well, as he has always done in every aspect of his life.”

Mandela, whose public appearances have grown rare as he has become increasingly frail, was not present at the unveiling.

He also missed the funeral Saturday of his last surviving sibling, Makhulu Nothusile Bhulehluthi (born Nokuthamba Mandela), who died January 28.

Central bank governor Gill Marcus said Mandela had seen the notes and was “delighted”.

Blackberry Manufacturer CEOs Step Down

Blackberry-maker Research In Motion (RIM) has said its co-chief executives, Mike Lazaridis and Jim Balsillie have stepped down in a shake-up, reports the BBC.

Lazaridis, who founded RIM in 1984, will become vice chairman. Balsillie will continue to sit on the board but not have any operational role.

Chief Operating Officer, Thorsten Heins will replace them on Monday.

Investors have called for a strategy change as the company struggles to compete with Apple and Google.

The departure of RIM’s co-chief executives was long overdue. Not even troubled computer giant Hewlett-Packard – which lost two CEOs in less than a year – was as bad a technology car crash as Research In Motion.

First Apple, then Google managed to eat the Blackberry pie, and RIM did nothing to stop them. The company’s new boss will have to work very hard to keep RIM in the smartphone game.

Lazaridis, speaking after the announcement, said he recognized things needed to change at the company.

“There comes a time in the growth of every successful company when the founders recognize the need to pass the baton to new leadership,” he said at a press conference at RIM’s headquarters in Waterloo, Canada.

“Jim and I went to the board and told them that we thought that time was now.”

Heins started at RIM in 2007, having previously worked at Siemens Communications. He became the chief operating officer in August 2011, according to the company.

Heins said: “As with any company that has grown as fast as we have, there have been inevitable growing pains”.

“We have learned from those challenges and, I believe, we have and will become a stronger company as a result.”

Barbara Stymiest, who has been on the board of RIM since 2007, has been made the new chairman, a post that Balsillie and Mr Lazaridis also shared.

Blackberry has suffered major setbacks in recent months.

It had its worst service outage in 2011 and has been losing market share to its competitors in the smartphone markets.

Billions of dollars have been wiped from its market value as shares have tumbled 75% over the past 11 months and sales have dropped.

One of its latest offering the PlayBook tablet, a reply to Apple’s iPad, has not proven as popular as the company had hoped.

Larry Magid, a technology analyst with CNET, told the BBC World Service that Lazaridis and Balsillie had to go.

“Research In Motion, which once dominated the smartphone market, has been steadily losing market share both to the iPhone and iPad and the tablet area and the various android devices,” Magid said.

“I think it was a matter of time before these two made the wise choice to step aside and see if anybody else can do better with the company.”

As the information goes, the results of the autopsy will not be announced until about 4 to 6 weeks time.

The reason for this development is to wait for the completion of a toxicology report that should be ready at about that time.

Whitney Houstons' Daughter Hospitalized

Whitney Houston was found dead in the bathtub by her bodyguard in a luxury suite at the Beverly Hilton Hotel having accidentally overdosed on a cocktail of prescription drugs and alcohol, according to reports.Bottles of Lorazepam, Valium, Xanax and a sleeping medication were found in the hotel room.

The drugs were believed to have acted as sedatives, causing her to fall asleep in the bathtub once they had been mixed with alcohol. Whitney Houston's only child, Bobbi Kristina, 18, was taken to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center following the death of her mother. She's since been released. I can't even imagine what this poor girl is going through.

But is there no way families can help drug addicts? Get them help before it ends in such a tragic way? Imagine passing out and drowning in a bathtub...not the way to go. RIP Ms Houston
