Boko Haram - Kabir Sokoto Rearrested

An unconfirmed report has it that fleeing suspected Boko Haram bomber, Kabir Sokoto, has been rearrested at the Nigeria-Chad border.

Rumours in Abuja and a number of posts on Twitter said he was caught in unclear circumstances.

However, the spokesman for the Nigeria Police Force, Mr. Olusola Amore, said he had not been briefed.

He promised to issue a statement if the story was found to be true.

However, some bloggers on Twitter expressed doubts that the real suspect was caught, especially as no picture of the alleged bomber has ever been released by the police.

Sokoto, who is suspected to have masterminded the Christmas Day 2011 bomb blast at the St. Theresa’s Catholic Church in Madalla, Niger State, escaped from a police van last week while he was being taken to his residence for a search.

President Goodluck Jonathan had on Wednesday reportedly given the Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Hafiz Ringim, 24 hours to produce the suspect or be sacked.

The Minister of Police Affairs, Mr. Caleb Olubolade, told newsmen after the Federal Executive Council meeting in Abuja on Wednesday that Ringim had been queried over the suspect’s escape.

A number of senior police officers, including the Commissioner of Police, FCT Command, Mr. Zakari Biu, have been reportedly placed under house arrest and suspended for involvement in the incident.

Nigeria Oil Minister Diezani Alison-Madueke Sons' Private Jet and Lifestyle: Deziani Allison Madueke, Nigeria`s Petroleum minister, penultimate week introduced untold hardship into Nigerian families by unilaterally demanding PPRA to announce the removal of oil subsidy. Consequently, cost of transportation increased by 100 percent.

Days before Christmas,a widow had left her base with her five children to the village for Christmas. In her words, “i paid three thousand naira(N3,000.00) for each of us to travel to the village and had set aside another eighteen thousand (N18,000.00)for the return trip”. However, when she arrived the motor park on Jan . 2nd, one day after the removal of oil subsidy, she discovered that the cost of transportation had increased.

They asked her to pay six thousand naira (N6,000.00) per head, she broke down and wept openly and pleaded for three thousand naira per head. But her plea fell on deaf ears and was turned away. Simultaneously, Deziani Allison Madueke`s family were traveling around the globe in private jet, funded by a government, which she claims was broke.

Police fire teargas at protesters in Lagos after approved by Fashola

Police fire teargas at protesters in Lagos after approved by Fashola: A detachment of policemen led by the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, Mr. Tunde Sobulo, fired teargas indiscriminately at protesters marching from the state house of assembly towards the Gani Fawehinmi Freedom Park in Ojota, Lagos.

During the march tagged, “Defy The Dictator,” the protesters converged on the house of assembly to demand the immediate withdrawal of soldiers from the streets of Lagos and the reversal of the pump price of petrol to N65.

The protesters then began to march from the assembly complex at Alausa, Ikeja to the Gani Fawehinmi Freedom Park in Ojota, having obtained a permit from the state government to hold a rally there.

The park was the venue of five days of rallies, where various speakers spoke for five days against the removal of fuel subsidy.

However, they were warned by policemen not to go beyond the house of assembly to the park.

Led by a former Minister of Education, Prof. Ben Nwabueze; human rights lawyers, Dr. Tunji Braithwaite and Mr. Festus Keyamo, they defied the police warning and continued towards the park.

Speaking at the assembly, Braithwaite said the deployment of soldiers in Lagos was totally unwarranted while Nwabueze said it was unfortunate.

They were received by some members of the house, who said the deployment of soldiers was unacceptable.

They ran into a barricade mounted by the police and soldiers at 7Up Bottling Company on the Secretariat Road. The police also mounted a separate barricade on Ikosi Road, across the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway as well as the nearby Kudirat Abiola Road.

The situation caused traffic jams in the Alausa and Ojota areas.

To stop the protesters from getting to the park, the policemen fired several canisters of tearsgas, forcing many of the marchers to scamper to safety.

The marchers returned again and sat on the road, refusing to move.

The protesters then turned back towards the Governor’s Office.

How NNPC Defrauds Nigerians on oil exports and subsidy

The KPMG, in a forensic analysis of the operations of the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation in 2010, unveiled startling revelations about the company. The report showed that the NNPC is a rotten egg, from which a miasma of stench oozes, to the detriment of the Nigerian government and the Nigerian people.
In one of the findings, KPMG found that the NNPC does not even have the data of crude oil production in a centralized manner as it is stored in the computer of staff. NNPC approves oil lifting to companies not on the government approved list; there are delays in billing the oil lifters and variants between the invoice value and the LC value. In one such instance, invoice number COS/02?PPMC/026/08 has a cargo valuation of $95.4 million, but LC value of $85million. The four refineries in 2008 and 2009 recorded capacity utilization of 18 per cent; the process of importing fuel is murky, sometimes companies not approved in a quarter, suddenly re-appeared on the list. Others are that the NNPC incurs average demur rage of 31 days for oil cargoes, subsidy claims based on volume of products imported, not on what was actually lifted out of the depots for sale to Nigerians.

Some of the findings that will shock Nigerians and labour unions:

1. “No centralized location for storing electronic copies of historical production and allocation data. These information are stored on personnel (individual) workstations.

Implication: Potential loss of historical production information in event of staff turnover or system failure. Difficulty in retrieving prior documents/ reports.

2.NNPC is invoiced in US$ for domestic crude allocations but is expected to remit the equivalent Naira value to the Federation Account. However we observed that exchange rates used by NNPC were lower than the average exchange rates published by the CBN during the review period.
Exchange rate variances for 2007, 2008 and 2009 were estimated at N25.7 bn, N33.8 bn and N26.7 bn respectively. (using CBN rates for the month of transaction)
NNPC claimed they obtained the exchange rates from CBN via phone but there was no document to substantiate the claim.

Implication: Significant underpayment of domestic crude cost to the Federation Account.

3.We observed that NNPC‟s subsidy claims and PPPRA‟s verification are based on volume of petroleum products available for sale (volume of products imported and actual production from the refineries) as against duly verified volume of products lifted out of the depots (volume of petroleum products sold) as stipulated in the subsidy guidelines.

Implications:Potential risk of subsidy payment on products not consumed by end users due to losses from pipeline vandalism, theft e.t.c. A rough estimation of subsidy payment on product losses for the period under review (2007 – 2009) is estimated at N 11.8 billion.
Risk of payment of subsidy on locally refined products which is not the intent of subsidy may encourage inefficiencies in the refinery process.

Militants Invade Crude Oil Platforms

As you read this, some militant youths in the oil-producing communities in Nigeria have surrounded several oil platforms in their area – particularly in Delta and Rivers States. What they intend to do is dangerous and have the capacity to take the ongoing crisis to a more dangerous dimension, a source added.

Their action is said to be inspired by the threat of...
PENGASSAN to embark on a total shutdown of oil platforms in the country in solidarity with organised Labour in the struggle to make life less difficult for ordinary Nigerians.

Last week, PENGASSAN leadership was said to have also raised an alarm that they were being threatened by some militants in connection with their decision to join the nationwide strike.

According to a reliable source, “the militants are positioning themselves to pump the crude oil.” Their action is predicated on the premise that the oil is on their land and as such if PENGASSAN leave they will move in and #OccupyNigeria The Oil Platforms.

This situation, according to those on ground, could get out of hand as few members of PENGASSAN on duty are no longer comfortable being surrounded by these militants.

Relevant authorities, especially the JTF, should please intervene and restore peace.

Reason why “Desmond Elliot” dumped GEJ

Reason why “Desmond Elliot” dumped GEJ: As the protest over fuel subsidy removal rages, many Nigerian entertainers who initially supported Goodluck Jonathan during his presidential campaign last year have eventually dumped him to his fate.

Top on the list of these entertainers is actor Desmond Elliot. He was one of the many Nollywood stars that endorsed Goodluck Jonathan months before the April 2011 polls.

Surprisingly, the same actor on Wednesday, made a U-turn on his support for the president, while speaking at the mass protest against the fuel subsidy removal, in Ojota, Lagos.

The baby-face actor said the action is not only meant to inflict untold hardship on the innocent masses but also, it is a harsh decision on the part of the government.

He took to his Twitter account to express his disappointment in the incumbent administration. He tweeted:

‘We have lost everything we met on the land. Cocoa, palm oil, groundnuts, cotton, cashew and rubber have been forgotten and are better produced by nations who came to learn from us. We have lost our moral compass, our society is fractured, our statehood is threatened.

“Our citizens are in all prisons around the world. Some of them prefer foreign prisons to coming back to Nigeria. Our passport is treated with disdain everywhere you present it. Why should our government be this big with special advisers on cassava and beans affairs.

Do we need 36 ministers? Why would our president spend close to a billion on food while close to eighty percent live on less than a dollar a day? Why should he budget a billion for generators and diesel when he is urging us to believe in his power sector reform? Why should we believe the government when it says the subsidy gain will be properly reinvested. Bad leadership and coruption must stop.

Also Dickson Iroegbu who campaigned for Jonathan has equally dumped him. A notable film maker cum writer, Iroegbu last year relocated to Abuja, all in the bid to campaign for GEJ. “Goodluck for Nigeria” and “It’s Possible” was his slogans then.

Lending support to the President last year, Iroegbu said “like many actors, we have seen Jonathan improve by the day. I personally trust him. I can fight for him to shine like a star. He said he will ensure that no Nigerian goes to bed hungry, it is not about crying, he has started taking actions already.

Mr. President is in dire need of all of us to drive away the hawks in power, and as our leader, he has shown the right direction so far. A little benefit of doubt can solve the “Ifs” theory in film making. If he continues this way, then soon, very soon we shall be united.”

Ironically, speaking against the fuel subsidy removal, the notable film maker accused President Jonathan of being insensitive to the plight of the poor masses.

His words “I have said it before, it is an insensitive action. It is anti-masses. Personally, I don’t care what government thinks they are doing in the name of palliatives. First and foremost, government should go back to status quo. I feel aggrieved. I feel sad. This deceit must stop.”

This government is losing credibility too fast. The price of goods, transportation, medical, and everything else has skyrocketed. People who traveled to various places can’t return to base, we can go on and on. It is quite disheartening.

I am also suffering it. People have called me names I don’t deserve, just for supporting President Goodluck Jonathan.”

On his own, Segun Arinze urged the president to listen to the voice of the masses and do well to revert the fuel price. He faulted the government for not building trust in the Nigerian citizens before implementing such policy.

Arinze whose faction of the Actors Guild of Nigeria(AGN) recently organised a “Nollywood Roundtable on Deregulation” at Eko Hotel and Suites to drum support for the federal government on the removal of the controversial fuel subsidy was speaking at a television show monitored by HVP.

Other Nollywood stars who should bury their faces in shame included Francis Duru who co-ordinated Naija Artistes for Goodluck project with an umbrella body called Goodluck Campaign last year alongside Richard Ossai, veteran actor Olu Jacobs, Monalisa Chinda Ramsey Nuoah Susan Peters, Genevieve Nnaji, Ufuoma Ejenobor, Ngozi Nwosu, Nonso Diobi, Clem Ohameze and Femi Brainard.

Others are; Linc and Yul Edochie, Yemi Blaq, Mercy Aigbe, Ejike Asiegbu, Uche Iwuji, Chinyere Winifred, Uche Obodo, Emmanuella Njudigbo, Maureen Solomon, Tony Umez, Emeka Enyiocha, Benita Nzeribe and several top Northern based actors who trooped into the audio visual of the MSquad crew to shoot a video for a song, which was produced by Asuquo. Today, these entertainers are singing a different song.
